Adjectives

Τα επίθετα

Match common adjectives to singular and plural nouns.

Explanation + practice

1. Singular adjectives

An adjective agrees with its noun in gender and number. Here are four common adjectives:

English Masculine Feminine Neuter
small μικρός μικρή μικρό
big / large μεγάλος μεγάλη μεγάλο
good καλός καλή καλό
new καινούριος καινούρια καινούριο

In Είμαι καλά (“I am well”), καλά is an adverb meaning “well” or “fine.” It does not change with the subject. The adjective καλός means “good” and changes to agree with the noun: καλός, καλή, καλό.

Ο σκύλος είναι μικρός.

The dog is small.

Η τσάντα είναι καινούρια.

The bag is new.

2. Plural adjectives

For these adjectives, masculine plurals end in -οι, feminine plurals in -ες, and neuter plurals in -α:

English Masculine Feminine Neuter
small μικροί μικρές μικρά
big / large μεγάλοι μεγάλες μεγάλα
good καλοί καλές καλά
new καινούριοι καινούριες καινούρια

Οι γάτες είναι μικρές.

The cats are small.

Τα σπίτια είναι μεγάλα.

The houses are big.

3. Before a noun

Put the adjective between the article and the noun: το μικρό σπίτι (the small house), μια μεγάλη τσάντα (a big bag).

Έχω ένα καινούριο βιβλίο.

I have a new book.

Οι μικροί σκύλοι πίνουν νερό.

The small dogs are drinking water.

4. Adjectives with direct objects

Adjectives also agree with a noun in the accusative. For the adjective patterns in this lesson, the masculine form changes. The feminine and neuter forms stay the same.

Gender Nominative Accusative
masculine μικρός μικρό
feminine μικρή μικρή
neuter μικρό μικρό
Gender Nominative Accusative
masculine plural μικροί μικρούς
feminine plural μικρές μικρές
neuter plural μικρά μικρά

Έχω έναν μικρό σκύλο.

I have a small dog.

Έχω μικρούς σκύλους.

I have small dogs.
