Accusative

Η αιτιατική

Use singular accusative forms with έχω.

Explanation + practice

1. From subject to object

The noun forms learned so far are nominative forms. Use the accusative for a direct object, such as the thing someone has:

Ο σκύλος είναι εδώ.

The dog is here. (Subject: nominative.)

Έχω τον σκύλο.

I have the dog. (Object: accusative.)

The article and sometimes the noun ending change in the accusative. This lesson uses singular forms only.

2. Articles and noun endings

Gender Nominative Accusative English
Masculine ο σκύλος τον σκύλο the dog
Feminine η γάτα τη γάτα the cat
Neuter το βιβλίο το βιβλίο the book
  • Masculine nouns ending in -ος change to -ο: σκύλος → σκύλο, φίλος → φίλο.
  • The feminine nouns in -α and -η learned so far keep their endings: γάτα → γάτα, φίλη → φίλη.
  • Neuter nouns have the same nominative and accusative forms.

The indefinite articles change like this:

Gender Nominative Accusative English
Masculine ένας σκύλος έναν σκύλο a dog
Feminine μια γάτα μια γάτα a cat
Neuter ένα βιβλίο ένα βιβλίο a book

τη or την?

Use την before a vowel or κ, π, τ, ξ, ψ, μπ, ντ, γκ, τσ, τζ. Otherwise, use τη: την πόρτα, but τη γάτα and τη φίλη.

In writing, masculine τον and έναν always keep their final -ν.

3. Three new nouns

Nominative Accusative English
ο χυμός τον χυμό the juice
η τσάντα την τσάντα the bag
το μολύβι το μολύβι the pencil

Η Μαρία πίνει έναν χυμό.

Maria is drinking a juice.

Έχω την τσάντα.

I have the bag.

Έχεις ένα μολύβι;

Do you have a pencil?

4. Questions

The object stays in the accusative in questions:

Έχετε τον σκύλο;

Do you have the dog? (Plural or polite.)

Έχεις την τσάντα;

Do you have the bag? (Singular.)

5. Negatives

The object also stays in the accusative in negative sentences:

Δεν έχω το βιβλίο.

I don't have the book.

Δεν πίνω τον χυμό.

I’m not drinking the juice.
