Plurals

Ο πληθυντικός

Learn common plural noun endings and articles.

Explanation + practice

1. Plural subjects

For plural subjects, the definite article (“the”) changes from ο or η to οι, and from το to τα. The noun ending also changes. These are the nominative forms.

Pattern Singular Plural English
Masculine -ος → -οι ο σκύλος οι σκύλοι the dog → the dogs
Feminine -α → -ες η γάτα οι γάτες the cat → the cats
Feminine -η → -ες η φίλη οι φίλες the friend → the friends (female)
Neuter -ο → -α το βιβλίο τα βιβλία the book → the books
Neuter -ι → -ια το σπίτι τα σπίτια the house → the houses
Neuter -ί → -ιά το παιδί τα παιδιά the child → the children

These are common patterns, not rules for every noun. Notice the accent in βιβλίο → βιβλία and παιδί → παιδιά.

Οι γάτες είναι εδώ.

The cats are here.

Οι σκύλοι πίνουν νερό.

The dogs are drinking water.

Τα παιδιά μένουν εδώ.

The children live here.

Οι φίλες έχουν έναν σκύλο.

The friends have a dog. (Female friends.)

2. Plural objects

For plural direct objects, use the accusative articles τους, τις, τα. Masculine nouns ending in -οι change to -ους. Feminine plurals in -ες and all neuter plurals keep the same noun form in the accusative.

Gender Nominative Accusative English
Masculine οι σκύλοι τους σκύλους the dogs
Feminine οι τσάντες τις τσάντες the bags
Neuter τα βιβλία τα βιβλία the books

Τα παιδιά πίνουν τους χυμούς.

The children are drinking the juices.

Έχω τις τσάντες.

I have the bags.

Έχουμε τα βιβλία.

We have the books.

3. Without an article

Ένας, μια, ένα have no plural forms. When saying that someone has books, cats, or similar things without specifying which ones, use the plural noun without an article:

Έχω βιβλία.

I have books.

Τα σπίτια έχουν πόρτες.

The houses have doors.
