Days of the week

Οι μέρες της εβδομάδας

Talk about your week, everyday routines, and plans for next Monday.

Explanation + practice

1. The seven days of the week

Modern calendars in Greece normally show Monday (Δευτέρα) as the first day of the week.

English Greek Pronunciation (approx.)
Monday η Δευτέρα def-TEH-ra
Tuesday η Τρίτη TREE-tee
Wednesday η Τετάρτη teh-TAR-tee
Thursday η Πέμπτη PEM-ptee
Friday η Παρασκευή pa-ra-skeh-VEE
Saturday το Σάββατο SA-va-to
Sunday η Κυριακή kee-ree-a-KEE

A useful pattern

Six of the seven days are feminine and use η.

Saturday is the exception: το Σάββατο is neuter.

In Greek, days of the week are normally capitalized.

The names Δευτέρα, Τρίτη, Τετάρτη, and Πέμπτη are related to the words for second, third, fourth, and fifth. They reflect the traditional numbering of the week, with Sunday as the first day. Παρασκευή also means preparation, while Κυριακή is associated with the Lord's day.

2. Saying "on Monday", "on Tuesday", etc.

To say “on” a particular day, use τη(ν) before feminine day names and το before Σάββατο. No preposition is needed.

English Greek
on Monday τη Δευτέρα
on Tuesday την Τρίτη
on Wednesday την Τετάρτη
on Thursday την Πέμπτη
on Friday την Παρασκευή
on Saturday το Σάββατο
on Sunday την Κυριακή

Useful sentences

Θα έρθω τη Δευτέρα.

I'll come on Monday.

Έχω μάθημα ελληνικών την Τρίτη.

I have a Greek lesson on Tuesday.

Θα πάμε στην Αθήνα την Τετάρτη.

We'll go to Athens on Wednesday.

Έχω ραντεβού την Πέμπτη.

I have an appointment on Thursday.

Θα βγούμε την Παρασκευή το βράδυ.

We'll go out on Friday evening.

Θα πάμε στην παραλία το Σάββατο.

We'll go to the beach on Saturday.

Την Κυριακή θα μείνουμε σπίτι.

On Sunday we'll stay home.

3. Saying "every Monday"

There are two very common ways to express repeated days.

Method A: κάθε + day

Κάθε Δευτέρα

Every Monday.

Κάθε Σάββατο

Every Saturday.

Method B: τις + plural day (or τα for Saturday)

Τις Δευτέρες

On Mondays.

Τα Σάββατα

On Saturdays.

Both constructions are natural and common.

English With κάθε With plural article
Every Monday κάθε Δευτέρα τις Δευτέρες
Every Tuesday κάθε Τρίτη τις Τρίτες
Every Wednesday κάθε Τετάρτη τις Τετάρτες
Every Thursday κάθε Πέμπτη τις Πέμπτες
Every Friday κάθε Παρασκευή τις Παρασκευές
Every Saturday κάθε Σάββατο τα Σάββατα
Every Sunday κάθε Κυριακή τις Κυριακές

Useful sentences

Πηγαίνω στο σούπερ μάρκετ κάθε Σάββατο.

I go to the supermarket every Saturday.

Πηγαίνω στο σούπερ μάρκετ τα Σάββατα.

I go to the supermarket on Saturdays.

These two sentences mean essentially the same thing.

Τις Δευτέρες δουλεύω από το σπίτι.

On Mondays I work from home.

Κάθε Τετάρτη κάνω μάθημα ελληνικών.

Every Wednesday I have a Greek lesson.

Τις Κυριακές συνήθως ξεκουραζόμαστε.

On Sundays we usually relax.

4. The grammatical forms of the days

Greek nouns change according to their grammatical case. The days of the week are no exception.

Nominative Accusative Genitive
η Δευτέρα τη Δευτέρα της Δευτέρας
η Τρίτη την Τρίτη της Τρίτης
η Τετάρτη την Τετάρτη της Τετάρτης
η Πέμπτη την Πέμπτη της Πέμπτης
η Παρασκευή την Παρασκευή της Παρασκευής
το Σάββατο το Σάββατο του Σαββάτου
η Κυριακή την Κυριακή της Κυριακής

The nominative is used when the day is the subject of the sentence.

Η Δευτέρα είναι δύσκολη μέρα.

Monday is a difficult day.

The accusative is used in common time expressions.

Θα φύγω την Παρασκευή.

I'll leave on Friday.

The genitive can express a relationship or association.

Το πρόγραμμα της Δευτέρας είναι γεμάτο.

Monday's schedule is full.

Το μεσημέρι του Σαββάτου θα είμαστε σπίτι.

On Saturday afternoon we'll be at home.

5. Referring to specific days

These expressions use the accusative to say when something happens.

Use these expressions to specify this, next, or last Monday. The same patterns work with the other days; Saturday uses the neuter forms shown below.

English Greek
this Monday αυτή τη Δευτέρα
next Monday την επόμενη Δευτέρα
last Monday την περασμένη Δευτέρα
this Saturday αυτό το Σάββατο
next Saturday το επόμενο Σάββατο

A useful colloquial expression: από Δευτέρα
