1. Asking what time it is
| Greek | English |
|---|---|
| Τι ώρα είναι; | What time is it? |
| Ξέρεις τι ώρα είναι; | Do you know what time it is? (informal singular) |
| Ξέρετε τι ώρα είναι; | Do you know what time it is? (polite or plural) |
2. Saying the exact hour
The numbers agree with the feminine noun ώρα (hour): use μία, not ένα, for one o’clock.
| Time | Greek |
|---|---|
| 1:00 | Είναι μία. |
| 2:00 | Είναι δύο. |
| 3:00 | Είναι τρεις. |
| 4:00 | Είναι τέσσερις. |
| 5:00 | Είναι πέντε. |
| 6:00 | Είναι έξι. |
| 7:00 | Είναι επτά / εφτά. |
| 8:00 | Είναι οκτώ / οχτώ. |
| 9:00 | Είναι εννέα / εννιά. |
| 10:00 | Είναι δέκα. |
| 11:00 | Είναι έντεκα. |
| 12:00 | Είναι δώδεκα. |
Both forms of seven, eight, and nine are correct; εφτά, οχτώ, and εννιά are common in everyday speech.
You can add η ώρα (Είναι τρεις η ώρα), but it is usually omitted in conversation.
3. Minutes past the hour — και
Use και (“and”) to add minutes after the hour.
Hour + και + minutes
| Time | Greek | English |
|---|---|---|
| 3:05 | Τρεις και πέντε | Five past three |
| 3:10 | Τρεις και δέκα | Ten past three |
| 3:20 | Τρεις και είκοσι | Twenty past three |
You can answer with or without Είναι: Είναι τρεις και δέκα or Τρεις και δέκα.
4. Quarter past — και τέταρτο
Τέταρτο means a quarter of an hour (15 minutes).
| Time | Greek |
|---|---|
| 1:15 | Μία και τέταρτο |
| 4:15 | Τέσσερις και τέταρτο |
| 7:15 | Εφτά και τέταρτο |
You can also use the number of minutes: τρεις και δεκαπέντε (3:15).
5. Half past — και μισή
Use και μισή for half past. Μισή is feminine because it refers to μισή ώρα (half an hour).
| Time | Greek | English |
|---|---|---|
| 2:30 | Δύο και μισή | Half past two |
| 3:30 | Τρεις και μισή | Half past three |
| 6:30 | Έξι και μισή | Half past six |
You can also say τρεις και τριάντα (three thirty).
6. Minutes to the next hour — παρά
Παρά means “minus” here. Count back from the next hour.
Next hour + παρά + minutes remaining
| Time | Greek | English |
|---|---|---|
| 3:40 | Τέσσερις παρά είκοσι | Twenty to four |
| 3:50 | Τέσσερις παρά δέκα | Ten to four |
| 3:55 | Τέσσερις παρά πέντε | Five to four |
You can also read the hour and minutes directly: τρεις και σαράντα (3:40).
7. Quarter to — παρά τέταρτο
Use παρά τέταρτο with the next hour.
| Time | Greek |
|---|---|
| 2:45 | Τρεις παρά τέταρτο |
| 8:45 | Εννιά παρά τέταρτο |
| 12:45 | Μία παρά τέταρτο |
For 12:45, the next hour is one: μία παρά τέταρτο.
8. Parts of the day
To distinguish morning from evening, add a phrase such as το πρωί or το βράδυ.
| Greek | English |
|---|---|
| το πρωί | in the morning |
| το μεσημέρι | at midday / in the early afternoon |
| το απόγευμα | in the afternoon |
| το βράδυ | in the evening / at night |
| τη νύχτα | at night |
| τα μεσάνυχτα | at midnight |
Είναι οκτώ το πρωί.
It’s eight in the morning.
Είναι εννιά το βράδυ.
It’s nine in the evening.
The boundaries are flexible: το μεσημέρι can include early afternoon, while το απόγευμα refers to later afternoon.
For noon and midnight, say Είναι μεσημέρι (It’s noon) and Είναι μεσάνυχτα (It’s midnight).
9. Reading the 24-hour clock
Written schedules often use the 24-hour clock. You can read the numbers directly or convert them to a 12-hour expression.
| Written time | 24-hour reading | 12-hour expression |
|---|---|---|
| 14:00 | Δεκατέσσερις | Δύο το μεσημέρι |
| 18:30 | Δεκαοκτώ και τριάντα | Έξι και μισή το απόγευμα |
| 21:00 | Είκοσι μία | Εννιά το βράδυ |
The 12-hour expressions are more usual in everyday conversation.
10. Saying “at” a particular time
Compare telling the time with saying when something happens:
Είναι τρεις.
It’s three o’clock.
Θα φύγουμε στις τρεις.
We’ll leave at three o’clock.
Use στη μία for “at one” and στις for the other hours. These combine σε with the accusative article: σε + τη → στη, σε + τις → στις. One hour takes the singular; the other hours take the plural.
Θα έρθω στη μία.
I’ll come at one.
Το μάθημα αρχίζει στις έξι και μισή.
The lesson starts at half past six.
11. Asking what time something happens
Use Τι ώρα…; to ask when something happens.
Τι ώρα θα έρθεις;
What time will you come?
Τι ώρα αρχίζει η ταινία;
What time does the film start?
Τι ώρα κλείνει το μουσείο;
What time does the museum close?
Στις πόσες…; is an alternative in conversation:
Στις πόσες θα έρθεις;
What time will you come?
12. Saying “from … until …”
- από — from
- μέχρι — until
Keep the article before the hour: τις, or τη for one o’clock.
Το μαγαζί είναι ανοιχτό από τις εννιά μέχρι τις πέντε.
The shop is open from nine until five.
Θα είμαι εδώ από τη μία μέχρι τις τρεις.
I’ll be here from one until three.
13. Approximate times
| Greek | English |
|---|---|
| γύρω στις τρεις | around three |
| σχεδόν τρεις | almost three |
| τρεις και κάτι | a little after three / three-something |
| τρεις ακριβώς | exactly three |
Θα έρθω γύρω στις έξι.
I’ll come around six.
Είναι σχεδόν εννιά.
It’s almost nine.
14. Practice exercises
Translate into Greek. Write the times in words.
