Explanation + practice

1. Food

Greek English
το ψωμί bread
το τυρί cheese
το αυγό egg
το κοτόπουλο chicken
το ρύζι rice
η σαλάτα salad
η σοκολάτα chocolate

When talking about an unspecified amount of food or drink, leave out the article: ψωμί (bread), τυρί (cheese), νερό (water).

Έχουμε ψωμί και τυρί.

We have bread and cheese.

Η Μαρία έχει δύο αυγά.

Maria has two eggs.

Το αυγό becomes τα αυγά in the plural.

2. Fruit and vegetables

Greek English
το μήλο apple
η μπανάνα banana
το πορτοκάλι orange
η ντομάτα tomato
η πατάτα potato

The plural forms in this group are μήλα, μπανάνες, πορτοκάλια, ντομάτες, πατάτες.

3. Drinks

Greek English
ο καφές coffee
το γάλα milk

For a direct object, ο καφές becomes τον καφέ. Use έναν καφέ for “a coffee.”

Πίνω καφέ κάθε μέρα.

I drink coffee every day.

Τα παιδιά πίνουν γάλα.

The children are drinking milk.

4. Eating: τρώω

Τρώω means “I eat” or “I am eating.” Its present-tense forms have a different pattern from πίνω:

εσύ τρως you eat (singular)
αυτός / αυτή / αυτό τρώει he / she / it eats
εμείς τρώμε we eat
εσείς τρώτε you eat (plural / polite)
αυτοί / αυτές / αυτά τρώνε they eat

Τρώω κοτόπουλο και ρύζι.

5. Saying what you want: θέλω

Person Greek English
εγώ θέλω I want
εσύ θέλεις you want (singular)
αυτός / αυτή / αυτό θέλει he / she / it wants
εμείς θέλουμε we want
εσείς θέλετε you want (plural / polite)
