Explanation + practice

1. Numbers 1–20

Number Greek
1 ένα
2 δύο
3 τρία
4 τέσσερα
5 πέντε
6 έξι
7 επτά / εφτά
8 οκτώ / οχτώ
9 εννέα / εννιά
10 δέκα
11 έντεκα
12 δώδεκα
13 δεκατρία
14 δεκατέσσερα
15 δεκαπέντε
16 δεκαέξι
17 δεκαεπτά / δεκαεφτά
18 δεκαοκτώ / δεκαοχτώ
19 δεκαεννέα / δεκαεννιά
20 είκοσι

Both versions of 7, 8, and 9 are correct. Εφτά, οχτώ, εννιά and the corresponding forms in 17–19 are common in everyday speech.

2. Numbers that change with gender

One, three, and four change to match the gender of the noun. The same pattern applies to thirteen and fourteen.

Number Masculine Feminine Neuter
1 ένας μία / μια ένα
3 τρεις τρεις τρία
4 τέσσερις τέσσερις τέσσερα
13 δεκατρείς δεκατρείς δεκατρία
14 δεκατέσσερις δεκατέσσερις δεκατέσσερα

The other numbers from 2 to 20 do not change with gender.

Τρεις φίλοι και τρία παιδιά.

Three friends (male) and three children.

Τέσσερις φίλες και τέσσερα βιβλία.

Four friends (female) and four books.

3. Numbers in the accusative

Numbers agree with the noun’s gender, using the forms in section 2. For numbers 1–20, those forms stay the same in the accusative, except masculine ένας, which becomes έναν.

Feminine μια and neuter ένα have the same form in the nominative and accusative.

Ένας σκύλος είναι εδώ.

One dog is here.

Έχω έναν σκύλο.

I have one dog.

Compare these subject and object pairs. Τρεις is used with masculine and feminine nouns; τρία is used with neuter nouns. Neither number form changes in the accusative.

Masculine

Τρεις σκύλοι είναι εδώ.

Three dogs are here.

Έχω τρεις σκύλους.

I have three dogs.

Here the noun changes from σκύλοι to σκύλους, but τρεις stays the same.

Feminine

Τρεις γάτες είναι εδώ.

Three cats are here.

Έχω τρεις γάτες.

I have three cats.

Neuter

Τρία βιβλία είναι εδώ.

Three books are here.

Έχω τρία βιβλία.

I have three books.
